Common Issues

No matter where the blockage occurs in the drains there are three areas they start from. Be mindful of what you are putting down your drains to help keep them flowing for longer.

  • From the bathroom:
    • Hair
    • Feminine hygiene products
    • Non-flushable paper
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
    • Excessive amounts of dirt
  • From the Kitchen:
    • Food waste such as vegetable scraps
    • Coffee grounds or tea leaves
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
  • Outside the property:
    • Tree roots
    • Excessive garden waste such as leaves and soil.

Get Winter Ready

Winter is always a bad time for drainage issues as the colder months cause problems such as:

  • Freezing and thawing of pipes resulting in breaks and cracks
  • Ice build-up catching waste
  • Fat and oil solidifying in pipes due to the cold weather

Coupled with heavy rainfall, unmaintained drains can quickly become overwhelmed and problems arise

Preventing blocked drains in Longford

Drain Maintenance

So many of us wait until something goes wrong with our drains before looking after them.

Regular drain maintenance leads to a healthy drain system at your property meaning you are not left with any nasty problems when you least need them.

Partial Blockages

Partially blocked drains, or ones in need of maintenance, will continue to allow water to drain away overtime. This makes them harder to spot but there are signs to look out for however;

  • Slow draining, or standing water
  • Unpleasant smells from the drains
  • Noises when water drains away can suggest blockages further down the pipe

Case Study of Blocked Drain Longford

A Local Drainage Specialist with Local Knowledge

Something we see as really important when treating drainage problems is local knowledge. Below is an example of how we fixed a blocked drain for one of our customers in Longford.

How did it start

The Longford business owner called us for help as their property had flooded and it looked to be due to the drains. They asked us for immediate help as it meant the property was unusable.

The business owner needed to avoid delays and asked if it was possible to do this without having to dig around the property, which is also preferable when a property is flooded.

Fixing the problem

Now we knew what we were dealing with we knew how to rectify the problem immediately and with no need for any digging. Using drain jetting we were able to break up and dislodge the blockage as well as clean the inside of the pipe leaving it like new.

We also advised the owner of common household and commercial items which can cause blockages to help avoid similar problems in the future.

Identifying the problem

While it was clear the drains were blocked due to the flooding, the cause and location still needed to be identified. This was made harder due to the which makes digging almost impossible.

Fortunately, DHC Utilities uses CCTV surveys to locate and assess problems which requires minimal to no digging, ideal for this situation.

The CCTV survey showed a complete build-up of fat fully blocking the drain of the property.

The result

The blockage of the drain at the Longford premises was identified and removed returning the drain to full, free flowing working order again.

Both the CCTV survey and the drain jetting were completed with no-digging needed leaving the property untouched at the surface.
