Blocked drains have a few tell-tale signs from when the blockage starts to it getting progressively worse. As issues develop they will create increasingly troublesome to showstopping problems inside and around the property, from bad smells, odd noises, slow draining to no draining at all.

While you may look to fix your indoor plumbing with plungers and chemicals, once the outdoor drains become blocked it is time to call in one of DHC’s drainage specialists.

Common Causes

No matter where the blockage occurs in the drains there are three areas they start from. By being aware what you put down your drains you can keep them working for longer;

  • From the bathroom:
    • Hair
    • Feminine hygiene products
    • Non-flushable paper
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
    • Excessive amounts of dirt
  • From the Kitchen:
    • Food waste such as vegetable scraps
    • Coffee grounds or tea leaves
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
  • Outside the property:
    • Tree roots
    • Excessive garden waste such as leaves and soil.

Get Ready For Winter

Winter is a key flash point for drainage problems as the colder months present problems such as;

  • Freezing and thawing of pipes resulting in breaks and cracks
  • Ice build-up catching waste
  • Fat and oil solidifying in pipes due to the cold weather

Coupled with heavy rainfall, unmaintained drains can quickly become overwhelmed and problems arise

Drain Maintenance

Many homeowners wait until something goes wrong with their drains before paying them any mind. Regular drain maintenance can prevent many problems at a far lower cost and with the added benefit of issues not flaring up at the least convenient time.

Partial Blockages

Partially blocked drains, or ones in need of maintenance, will continue to allow water to drain away overtime. This makes them harder to spot but there are signs to look out for however;

  • Slow draining, or standing water
  • Unpleasant smells from the drains
  • Noises when water drains away can suggest blockages further down the pipe

Gorsehill Blocked Drain Case Study

A Local Drainage Specialist with Local Knowledge

Something we see as really important when treating drainage problems is local knowledge. Below is an example of how we fixed blocked drains for one of our customers in Gorsehill.

How did it start

The Gorsehill homeowner called us to get some help about persistent bad smells around the drains of their home. They asked for us to come and investigate the cause and whether it was a blockage.

Fixing the problem

With the cause identified we used drain jetting which is another no-dig approach in order to fix the drain. Drain jetting dislodges the build-up of waste and removes the fat build-up cleaning the inner surface of the drain.

To reduce the chances of further blockages we advised the owner of common household items that typically cause this kind of issue.

Identifying the problem

The client’s description of the problem suggested a blockage. This meant we needed to identify the cause to establish what would be needed to fix the problem along with where it had occurred in the drains.

We were able to do this by using a CCTV drain survey. This allowed us to avoid extensive digging and that all we needed to start was access to the nearest manhole.

The CCTV survey showed a build-up of fat had caught various waste from the property.

The result

The blockage of the drain at the Gorsehill property was identified and removed, returning the drain to full, free flowing working order again.

Both the CCTV survey and the drain jetting were completed with no-digging needed, leaving the property untouched at the surface.
