Blocked drains have a few tell-tale signs from when the blockage starts to it getting progressively worse. Usually this end with increasingly troublesome problems both inside and around the property, from bad smells, odd noises, and slow draining to no draining at all.

While you may look to fix your indoor plumbing with plungers and chemicals, once the outdoor drains become blocked it is time to call in one of DHC’s drainage specialists.

DHC has built up a robust experience gained over many years in dealing with blocked drains, allowing us to fix the problem quickly, efficiently, and wherever possible with minimal digging.

Common Causes

Outside drainage problems usually originate from one of three areas. With all unblocking jobs we also aim to inform clients of these areas and how they can avoid future blockages. The key areas are:

  • From the Kitchen:
    • Food waste such as vegetable scraps
    • Coffee grounds or tea leaves
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
  • From the bathroom:
    • Hair
    • Feminine hygiene products
    • Non-flushable paper
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
    • Excessive amounts of dirt
  • Outside the property:
    • Tree roots
    • Excessive garden waste such as leaves and soil.

Get Winter Ready

The colder, wetter months in winter and autumn put additional strain on drains. Problems to be aware of during this time include:

  • Freezing and thawing of pipes resulting in breaks and cracks
  • Ice build-up catching waste
  • Fat and oil solidifying in pipes due to the cold weather

Coupled with heavy rainfall, unmaintained drains can quickly become overwhelmed and problems arise

Drain Maintenance

When was the last time you thought about the condition and health of your drains? Probably never. Or if you did it will have been when something went wrong.

With a simple yearly check up you can avoid most problems and prevent unwanted blocked drains costing you time, money and potential embarrassment.

Partial Blockages

Partially blocked drains, or ones in need of maintenance, will continue to allow water to drain away overtime. This makes them harder to spot but there are signs to look out for however;

  • Slow draining, or standing water
  • Unpleasant smells from the drains
  • Noises when water drains away can suggest blockages further down the pipe

Flixton Blocked Drain Case Study

A Local Drainage Specialist with Local Knowledge

When treating drainage problems local knowledge is extremely important. Many homes, even on the same street, will have been built at different times creating different drainage setups. With our local knowledge however, we have a far better understanding of what to expect and how to deal with problems quickly and effectively.

Below is an example of how we fixed blocked drains for one of our customers in Flixton.

How did it start

We received an urgent call one Saturday morning from a customer with a blocked drain in Flixton. They had started hearing odd noises at the drains of their property and wanted us to do a quick investigation.

They were worried about a new patio they had just laid so also informed us we should try to avoid any digging.

Fixing the problem

Now we knew what we were dealing with we proceeded with another no-dig approach to fix the drain. Using drain jetting we were able to cut through the roots removing the blockage.

To reduce the chances of further blockages we applied patch lining which fixed, sealed, and reinforced the drain against further root growth.

Identifying the problem

From what the client described there were a few potential issues so an investigation via a CCTV survey was required. Not only would this help identify the problem, it also only needed access to a manhole so no digging required.

The survey identified roots from a nearby tree had grown through a crack in the drains. These roots had then started catching waste as it flowed through the pipe and over time a blockage had formed.

The result

The blockage of the drain at the Flixton property was identified and removed, returning the drain to full, free flowing working order again.

Patch lining the drain sealed and reinforced the area and provided protection against future problems.

As with the CCTV survey, the drain jetting and patch lining were applied via the manhole and without any digging meaning the client patio was left undisturbed.
