Fixing blockages in outdoor drains requires stronger chemicals, specialist knowledge and specific equipment. If you suspect a blockage in your outside drains it’s time to call in one of DHC’s drainage specialists.

Tips To Stop Blockages

No matter where the blockage occurs in the drains there are three areas they typically start from. By being mindful of what you are putting down your drains you can help keep them flowing for longer.

  • From the bathroom:
    • Hair
    • Feminine hygiene products
    • Non-flushable paper
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
    • Excessive amounts of dirt
  • From the Kitchen:
    • Food waste such as vegetable scraps
    • Coffee grounds or tea leaves
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
  • Outside the property:
    • Tree roots
    • Excessive garden waste such as leaves and soil.

Watching Out For Winter

The colder, wetter months in winter and autumn put additional strain on drains. Problems to be aware of during this time include:

  • Freezing and thawing of pipes resulting in breaks and cracks
  • Ice build-up catching waste
  • Fat and oil solidifying in pipes due to the cold weather

Coupled with heavy rainfall, unmaintained drains can quickly become overwhelmed and problems arise

How can you stop blocked drains in Clifford before they become an issue?

Drain Maintenance

So many of us wait until something goes wrong with our drains to then look after them.

Regular drain maintenance leads to a healthy drain system at your property, meaning you do not have a sudden emergency on your hands just at the worst possible time.

An annual check up can also help you plan for costs and avoid unexpected bills when you need them least.

Partial Blockages

Partially blocked drains, or ones in need of maintenance, will continue to allow water to drain away overtime. This makes them harder to spot but there are signs to look out for however;

  • Slow draining, or standing water
  • Unpleasant smells from the drains
  • Noises when water drains away can suggest blockages further down the pipe

Case Study Of Blocked Drain Clifford

A Local Drainage Specialist with Local Knowledge

Something we see as really important when treating drainage problems is local knowledge. By understanding your area we have a much greater understanding of what to expect, the equipment we will need, likely causes and what solutions to fix not just the immediate problem, but potential future ones.

Below is an example of how we fixed blocked drains for one of our customers in Clifford.

How did it start

We received a message from a homeowner in Clifford who noticed persistent bad smells around the drains of their property. They asked for us to come and investigate the cause and whether it was a blockage.

The client also expressed concerns about possibly having to have any digging done at the property and if that could be avoided.

Fixing the problem

Now we knew what we were dealing with we proceeded used our specialist drain jetting equipment to remove the fat build up. We also cleaned the inner surface of the drain to help prevent against future build ups and advised the owner of common household items that cause blockages, some of which they hadn’t expect to be a problem.

Finally, we signed them up to a annual drain maintenance programme to keep their drains clear f future build ups.

Identifying the problem

From what the client had described there were a few possible issues but a blocked drain was a likely one. Before carrying out any work we needed to be sure however. To do this we undertook a CCTV drain survey which also avoided any digging at the property.

The CCTV survey identified a build up of fat which had caught various forms of waste from the property.

The result

The blockage of the drain at the Clifford property was identified and removed using technology which avoided any digging. The fix was completed in just a couple of hours, resulting in minimum disruption and cost to the customer.
