Blocked Drains Broadheath?

DHC provide a full emergency call out service in Broadheath and the surrounding areas. You can get urgent drain assistance now by calling 07753 259 174 and we can be at most addresses in under 15 minutes.

Blocked drains may start with the odd noise or occasional bad smell, but as issues build-up, they can turn into much larger problems, with entire blockages and flooding being the end result if not addressed early on.

While you may look to fix your indoor plumbing with plungers and chemicals, once the outdoor drains become blocked it is time to call in one of DHC’s drainage specialists.

Stopping Blockages

Most blockages stem from one of three common areas. By being careful of what you put down your kitchen, bathroom and outside drains, you can significantly minimise the chance of a blockage. Here are the common mistakes we come across:

  • From the bathroom:
    • Hair
    • Feminine hygiene products
    • Non-flushable paper
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
    • Excessive amounts of dirt
  • From the Kitchen:
    • Food waste such as vegetable scraps
    • Coffee grounds or tea leaves
    • Traditional soaps (which contain greases and fats)
  • Outside the property:
    • Tree roots
    • Excessive garden waste such as leaves and soil

Whilst some of these are hard to avoid, blockages are usually caused by a build up of a combination of these.

Why Winter Is Worse?

The colder, wetter months in winter and autumn put additional strain on drains. Problems to be aware of during this time include:

  • Freezing and thawing of pipes resulting in breaks and cracks
  • Ice build-up catching waste
  • Fat and oil solidifying in pipes due to the cold weather

Coupled with heavy rainfall, unmaintained drains can quickly become overwhelmed and problems arise

Drain Maintenance

When was the last time you considered the state of your drains? Like most people, probably only when there’s a problem. Drains are hidden so it’s not surprising but by only considering them when something goes wrong, you are exposing yourself to a much larger financial and time cost to get issues fixed.

After fixing most blockages we recommend many home and business owners sign up for a low cost annual drain maintenance programme. This yearly reviews help keep your drains in good working order and avoid small problems becoming a major pain.

Partial Blockages

Partially blocked drains, or ones in need of maintenance, will continue to allow water to drain away overtime. This makes them harder to spot but there are signs to look out for however;

  • Slow draining, or standing water
  • Unpleasant smells from the drains
  • Noises when water drains away can suggest blockages further down the pipe

Broadheath Blocked Drain Case Study

A Local Drainage Specialist with Local Knowledge

The UK’s drains have gone through dramatic changes in the materials used and standards required. As such, the drains in one area of Manchester can be vastly different from the drains just a few miles away. This is why we believe a local knowledge of the area is key when successfully treating drainage problems.

Below is an example of how we fixed a blocked drain for one of our customers in Broadheath.

How did it start

We received a call regarding a blocked drain in Broadheath where a local restaurant had concerns about bad smells coming from their drains. They requested a visit to help identify the problem, suspecting a blockage.

Fixing the problem

With the cause identified we used drain jetting to cut through the roots and remove the blockage. To reduce the chances of further blockages we also applied patch lining which fixed, sealed, and reinforced the inside of the drain against future root growth.

Identifying the problem

From what the client had described we suspected a partial or complete blocked drain but need to be sure. If there was a blockage we also had to find out where it was in the drain. Both questions needed to be answered before a solution could be suggested.

To do this we used CCTV which simply needed access to the nearest manhole. By not digging a trench at the property we immediately saved on time, cost and inconvenience to the business owner. As a location serving food, the owner certainly didn’t want to draw attention to a problem with their drains.

The CCTV survey identified the culprit of the blockage. Roots had grown through a crack in the drain which led to a build-up of waste as it got caught on the roots.

The result

The blockage of the drain at the Broadheath property was identified and removed, returning the drain to full, working order again.

Patch lining the drain sealed and reinforced the problem area to prevent similar problems in the future.

As with the CCTV survey, the drain jetting and patch lining were done with no digging needed, leaving the property untouched at the surface and customer unaffected.
